О границах Гондора
Общие сведения
Гондор - южное королевство Верных дунэдайн, основано Исильдуром и Анарионом, сыновьями Элэндиля Высокого после низвержения Нумэнора в 3320 году Второй Эпохи. Основано как второе по значению после Арнора [1] ("For instance we have Arnor and Gondor, which he [автор - А.Р.] has retained because he desired to avoid Ardor. But it can now only (though reasonably) be explained after invention as due to a blending of Q. arnanore / arnanor with S. arn(a)dor > ardor. The name was in any case given to mean 'royal land' as being the realm of Elendil and so taking precedence of the southern realm". "Stone (-using people's) land". ... This meaning was understood by other peoples ignorant of Sindarin: cf. Stoningland (1 vol. edn. 882), and in particular the conversation of Theoden and Ghan 864f. In fact it is probable within the historical fiction that the Numenoreans of the Southern kingdom adopted this name from the primitive inhabitants of Gondor and gave it a suitable version in Sindarin. Согласно тексту Толкина, опубликованному в 42 номере "Виньяр Тэнгвар", "...when Elendil took as his dwelling the North Kingdom, owing to his friendship with the Eldar, and committed the South Kingdom to his sons, hey divided it so, as is said in ancient annals: "Isildur took as his own land all the region of Arnen [3]; but Anarion took the land from Erui to Mount Mindolluin and thence westward to the North Wood" (later in Rohan called the Firien Wood), "but Gondor south of Ered Nimrais they held in common [4]"".
